High on the priority list for a family with sporty children was a flat lawn for ball games which we created by levelling the majority of the site. New trees were planted to make a link to the woodland backdrop which was otherwise felt over-bearing and dominant. In addition, a new focal point in the form of a summerhouse helps keep attention in the garden as well as providing a place to sit and enjoy the garden, even in the rain. Lush planting beds soften and ground the house, blurring the junction between the hardscape of house and terrace. Shade for the dining table is provided by four table-top trained liquidambar trees which also offer stunning autumn colour. Quality materials tie in with those used on the house; Yorkstone laid in a random pattern and divided with rows of bricks with re-purposed roof tiles in the step risers which elevate the space and create a very individual space.
